Reception Blog

Week Beginning 16th March 2026

We have had another fun week of learning!

On Monday, the children performed their Mother’s Day Assembly to their Special Ladies. They did a fantastic job of singing, dancing and speaking clearly in the assembly and we were incredibly proud of them!

On Wednesday we thoroughly enjoyed learning all about instruments and were lucky enough to watch the Orchestra live during assembly. It was a wonderful experience for the children and an opportunity for them to ask questions about certain instruments. In the afternoon, we watched the Drama Club performance of Mary Poppins. The children really enjoyed the show and especially enjoyed seeing some of their older siblings and friends perform!

We have been practising our scissor skills this week and have been cutting a variety of textures such as paper, card and wool. It is brilliant to see how confident the children are at holding and manipulating the scissors. The children have been creating their own snipping challenges for their friends to complete in the finger gym area by drawing certain curved or straight-line patterns on paper for their friends to cut.

We have also enjoyed learning more about Ramadan and Eid. The children have been sharing stories about Eid as well as telling their friends about the different traditions! We even had a secret reader who came in and told us all about Eid and how it is celebrated.

Well done for another fantastic week of learning!

Week Beginning 9th March 2026

We have had another great week of learning!

In Maths this week, we have been learning the skill of 'subitising'. Subitising means being able to see a number without having to count (e.g. seeing 3 dots and saying the number 3 without having the count the dots). The children have started to subitise in their environments too (e.g. "There are 3 spoons in the mud kitchen"). Challenge: Can you tell us an example of when you were able to subitise on your journey to school?

In Literacy, we have started looking at the story The Journey Home. We discussed their predictions for what they thought the story might be about. We explored the map that was in Hattie Peck's suitcase. On the map we found out that the dark blue line is a motorway and we also found Stoke Poges. We even found our school!

In the story, Hattie Peck collects eggs from all around the world! We discussed as a class some of the animals that lay eggs. We then worked in partners to write a list of animals that lay eggs. The children worked well and took it in turns to write an animal. We used our phonics 'Fred fingers' to help us to spell the names of animals such as ants, crabs, frogs and hens.

We are looking forward to reading more of this story as the term goes on!

In Geography, we have been looking at aerial photos of our school and local area and this week we labelled the aerial photos with some of the landmarks in Stoke Poges.

Spring time fun in the sunshine

We have also been very busy making our Mother’s Day cards and reheasring for our Special Lady Assembly on Monday! The children are very excited to perform to the special ladies in their lives!

Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a fantastic week!

Week Beginning 2nd March 2026

We have had a very exciting week celebrating Communication Week!

Throughout the week, we have been thinking about the ways that we communicate with each other through our words, our body language and our facial expressions. We have had lots of circle time discussions about how important it is to communicate with each other by being kind, gentle and understanding towards those around us. We have been discussing how there are some people who cannot hear and some who cannot see and have also thought about the different ways that they could communicate.

Throughout the week, we have been learning some Makaton signs for various words and we have created a video to share them with you.

On Tuesday, we also had a workshop from West End in Schools and we all enjoyed re-enacting the story of Pinocchio. Each class in Reception and KS1 learnt a different part of the story and just before home time, we all went to the hall to perform our part to the rest of the school!

West End in Schools Workshop

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day! The children came to school dressed as their favourite character and we thoroughly enjoyed having some Secret Readers throughout the day, as well as reading with our Year 6 Buddies! The Year 6 Buddies also came down to Reception for a Drawing Club session! They had to create a new character for the animation Pink Panther! We were so impressed with their creativity and how well they worked with their Year 6 partners! In the afternoon, we took part in a quiz all about some of our favourite book characters, including The Gruffalo, Tiddler, Stick Man, The Cat in the Hat and many more!

Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a fantastic week of learning and fun!

Week Beginning 23rd February 2026

We have had a very busy week full of lots of exciting events!

We started the week by learning all about Lunar New Year! We learnt about how it is celebrated all over the world and we learnt the story of the Zodiac calendar. The children re-enacted 'The Great Race' and ordered the animals according to where they came in the race. The children also learnt that this year is the year of the Horse! We discussed how those who were born in 2020 were born in the year of the Rat, and those born in 2021 were born in the year of the Goat. They have thoroughly enjoyed making both collage and traditional lanterns and have been learning how to write numbers in Mandarin!

The children also learnt a traditional Lunar New Year greeting. Kung Hei Fat Choi means 'Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year!'

On Wednesday, we tried some oriental foods! The children were given the opportunity to try prawn crackers, sweet chilli sauce, jasmine rice, spring rolls and sweet and sour sauce. We were so impressed with the number of children who were willing to try each food, especially the sweet chilli sauce!

On Thursday we had our annual Flight Day Experience! We thoroughly enjoyed going on an adventure to Antarctica! The children were given their passports in the lounge. They then made their way to the check in desk, where they met Mrs Skehan who gave them their boarding cards. Once checked in, they made their way to security where Mrs McCloud put their bags through the scanner and Ms Barnett scanned the children. The children then made their way to Passport Control where they met Mrs Benians, who stamped their passport. Our Air Hostesses, Miss Wicks and Mrs Harris, then showed the children to their seat on the aircraft. Our Pilot Captain, Mrs Skehan, welcomed the children on board and ensured a safe and timely departure and the children had a safety briefing from their Cabin Crew before take-off. We enjoyed some in-flight entertainment all about Antarctica and even wrote down some facts about Antarctica and Penguins. The Cabin Crew took the children's food and drink order before it was time to land in Antarctica. The children put their warm clothes on that they had packed and we disembarked the aircraft.

When we got back to the classrooms, there were lots of Antarctic and penguin themed activities for the children to explore. The children made their own penguins with playdough, found and wrote sentences to describe penguin eggs, created their own penguins using paper and card, and even built a plane and re-enacted their journey to Antarctica. Reception had the most amazing time in Antarctica and onboard the SPS Airlines flight from Stoke Poges School Airport.

On Thursday afternoon, we were lucky enough to have two Mummies come in and tell us all about their amazing jobs at Heathrow Airport. One Mummy helps to check people in to their flight whilst another Mummy works in security! We had a great talk from both Mummies. The children asked some fantastic questions and we learnt a lot about the Airport. We even got to try out the metal detector! A big thank you to both Mummies for making this day even more exciting!

Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a fantastic week of learning and fun!

Week Beginning 9th February 2026

We have had a lovely week celebrating and learning about Valentine's Day! The children have thoroughly enjoyed accessing a variety of Valentine's themed activities, such as writing Valentine's Day cards, making love bugs in the Playdough area, printing hearts with kitchen rolls, making love heart paper chains, filling hearts with red words and searching for treasure in the rose water outside.

We have been busy celebrating other events too! We celebrated Internet Safety Day. We discussed how we can keep safe online and that we should always speak to a grown-up before accessing new websites. We also celebrated Pancake Day. We learnt about why people celebrate Shrove Tuesday and why it is celebrated with pancakes. The children have designed their own pancakes, made repeating pattern pancakes and enjoyed discussing their favourite pancake toppings!

Celebrating Shrove Tuesday

We have also been celebrating Children's Mental Health Week. On Friday, the children came to school dressed in mufti. The theme of the mufti was to 'express yourself' and it was lovely to see the children expressing themselves. We discussed that we may all be different but that being unique is what makes us special!

Well done Reception for another fantastic half-term at school!

Week Beginning 2nd February 2026

This week we have continued learning about penguins and their habitats, and we have focused on comparing the differences between the Humboldt, Emperor and Chinstrap penguins. The children are able to describe the differences between these penguins, including their physical features and their habitats. We listened to the different calls each penguin makes and what they use these calls for. The children are so nearly ready for their ‘flight experience day’ and their expedition to Antarctica in just a few weeks!

On Thursday, we challenged the children to work as a team to see if they could think of 15 facts about penguins! We were absolutely blown away by their enthusiasm, the facts that they remembered and how confidently they could speak about penguins. We were so impressed that we had to increase the challenge to 20 facts because 15 was just too easy for Reception!

We have also been investigating ice and have been freeing the penguins that were frozen overnight in ice, and they have thoroughly enjoyed the story ‘Super Duper Penguin Slide’ and sliding the frozen penguins down the guttering in the water area. The children have investigated how changing the angle of the guttering can make the penguins slide faster or slower.

Well done for another fantastic week of learning!

Week Beginning 26th January 2026

This week we have continued learning about penguins and the polar regions. We compared the animals that live in each polar region as well as the landscape of each region. We learnt that Antarctica is land that can be covered in ice and snow, but the Arctic is just ice without any land, so it is difficult for anything to grow there.

The children have been enjoying recreating scenes from the polar regions in the small world area. They have been using the images from the non-fiction texts to help them build the polar regions with the loose parts too.

Learning about the Polar Regions

In Maths this week, we have been learning about teen numbers. The children have learnt numbers 16-20 and we have been using the Numberblocks episodes to introduce each one.

Outside this week, we have been playing the game ‘The Floor is Lava’. This has been testing the children’s balance and co-ordination skills. They have really enjoyed being creative and finding a variety of ways to play the game safely.

Well done for another fabulous week of learning.

Week Beginning 19th January 2026

This week we have been learning all about penguins! We have learnt some amazing facts about penguins, such as:

  • They have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm in the freezing temperatures.
  • They live in big groups called colonies.
  • There are over 17 species of penguins. The smallest species stands at just 12 inches and it is called a Fairy Penguin.
  • They huddle to keep warm.
  • All penguins that live in the wild will live south of the Equator.

We also learnt the life cycle of an Emperor Penguin. They start as an egg, then hatch and become a chick, then when they shed their grey fluffy grey feathers they become a fledgling and then an adult penguin. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring non-fiction texts about Antarctica and have created their own drawings of penguins using charcoal as well as their own 2d penguin.

On Tuesday, we celebrated National Penguin Awareness Day! We enjoyed waddling around the school like penguins, we took part in a penguin huddle in the hall and even did our penguin dance!

Discovering Penguins

In Maths this week, we have been learning about teen numbers. The children have learnt numbers 11-15 and we have been using the Numberblocks episodes to introduce each one. The children have also been using these teen numbers in their learning time. There were some keys with numbers of dots on them and locks with the teen numbers on. The children had to count the dots on the keys and then match it to the lock. They found that when they had counted correctly and identified the correct lock, they could use the key to unlock it!

Well done Butterflies and Ladybirds for another fantastic week of learning!

Week Beginning 12th January 2026

This week we have been learning about the polar regions and the animals that live there. We learnt that The Arctic is at the top of our planet and Antarctica is at the bottom. We compared the animals that live in both polar regions and learnt that polar bears and reindeer live in the Arctic but that penguins live in Antarctica.

Exploring Antarctica

In Drawing Club this week, we have been using the book 'Lost and Found' as a stimuli. The children have drawn and described The Boy and The Penguin, as well as the different weather the pair faced on their journey.

The vocabulary words learnt this week in Drawing Club:

  • Confused

  • Accompany

  • Misplaced

  • Dejected

  • Consulted

  • Miniature

  • Constructed

After reading the story, the children were tasked with making a new boat for the Boy and the Penguin’s next adventure! They used the junk modelling to create their boats and then sailed them in the water trays.

The children enjoyed using a mixture of shaving foam, PVA glue and paint to create their own ‘puffy paint’ snowmen and snowflakes. They have also been very busy designing their own suitcases and packing a suitcase for a trip to a cold country.

Well done Butterflies and Ladybirds for another fantastic week of learning!

Week Beginning 6th January 2026

What an exciting first week back we have had!

This week, we have been learning about Winter. We have learnt that the daylight hours are shorter, the temperature drops, some birds and animals migrate to warmer places, people wear clothes such as gloves, scarves and hats to keep warm and that some animals hibernate for the winter. We also discussed how to keep safe in icy and stormy weather.

It has been very cold this week and the children have thoroughly enjoyed playing in the snow as well as exploring the ice this week. They have also been enjoying creating polar scenes in the small world area and have been using photographs from non-fiction books to help them create their scenes.

We have also been learning about New Year. We have learnt that this year is 2026 and we have been thinking about our dreams and goals for the coming year. It is wonderful to hear the children speaking confidently about their goals and about their achievements so far. We are very proud of our Ladybirds and Butterflies!

This week we have been learning about woodland animals. We learnt that some woodland animals are nocturnal, which means they sleep at night. We also learnt that some animals hibernate in the winter. The children have created their own collage owls and have learnt about different species of owl. We couldn't believe the size of some of them – The Blackiston-Fish Owl has a wingspan of up to 2 meters! We also learnt that some owls can see over 2 metres away in the dark! We read 'The Leaf Thief' which is a story about a squirrel who lives in a tree and the leaves keep disappearing!

This week we read the story 'The Leaf Thief'. The children became detectives and used the clues to work out who the leaf thief was. We found out that the thief was actually the wind! The children have created their own leaf themed suncatchers with paper plates and autumnal coloured tissue paper. We discussed how some trees change in the winter and lose their leaves. These are called deciduous trees. Some trees keep their green leaves all year round and these are called evergreen trees.

Autumn Leaves

On Thursday, we took part in the whole school ‘Cross Country Competition’. Each child or ran, or walked, with their Year 6 Buddy to earn team points for their team colour! We were so proud of the children’s resilience, determination and sportsmanship!

We have had a very important week learning about Remembrance and our school value for this month: Respect.

We know that many years ago there were two World Wars in which lots of people sadly lost their lives. Every year on 11th November, we remember those who fought and lost their lives, and those who continue to help protect our country. We wear poppies as a symbol of Remembrance and the children have enjoyed engaging in some poppy themed activities. They have decorated poppies with red paper and tissue paper and have printed Duplo poppies with paint. We also made our very own Remembrance Poppy Field in the sand pit. On Tuesday, we had a whole school Remembrance Day assembly and held a two-minute silence as a mark of respect.
